Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) is a high capacity bus based public transit system. It is a total/complete system; is safe, fast, comfortable, and comparatively affordable and makes the best use of the available road space. The system is designed and engineered with dedicated bus lanes on which no other vehicles encroach. Likewise, there are separate lanes for cyclists, motorized vehicles and pedestrians

Water and Wastewater Management

Water and Wastewater Management (WWM) is a thematic area identified as a priority for the 4 project cities of Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Rajkot (Gujarat), Siliguri (West Bengal) and Udaipur (Rajasthan). The cities in cooperation with the consortium of implementing agencies supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) team developed the Climate Resilient City Action Plans (CRCAP), which is an overarching strategy to develop the city’s resilience to climate change.

Air Quality and Transportation

The project in close collaboration with the City Authorities of
Coimbatore, Rajkot, Udaipur and Siliguri, identified quickwin
interventions, viable bankable projects fortified with technical studies. The ClimateResilientCITIES Action Plans (CRCAPs) have been outlined in consultation with the city authorities for each of the four cities specifically targeting actionable interventions to the transportation sector to reduce the challenges outlined towards improving air quality, mitigating GHG emissions and continuing along a low carbon development pathway.

Documentation on the trees of Rajkot

Green cover plays a significant role in sustainable development in a city. It helps to address climate change impacts, reduce pollution, improve overall health of citizens, reduce GHG emissions and temperatures. Trees also help to attract other taxa like birds, insects, reptiles etc. All of them play critical roles in the urban ecosystem. The tree density and diversity of Rajkot was studied to identify the areas where the city corporation needs to initiate plantation activities on a priority basis. Native species that can be planted have also been identified through the study. The city corporation has taken the results of the study into consideration while planning plantation activities under the city forest scheme.

City Biodiversity Index of Siliguri

Developed and maintained by the Singapore National Parks Department (NParks), with support from ICLEI, the CBD and others, the City Biodiversity Index is the only biodiversity index designed specifically for monitoring and evaluating biodiversity in cities. The application of the index has also been included in the Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework (CSCAF) by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. The City Biodiversity Index has been calculated for the city of Siliguri through the CapaCITIES project and will help the city to mainstream biodiversity conservation. Issues identified through this report will also feed into the Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, which is also being developed as part of the project.

CPR’s Climate Action Case Study for Rajkot

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), supported the Center for Policy Research (CPR) in developing a policy paper highlighting how cities can use existing governance arrangements to scale discrete climate actions. CPR also developed a framework that can be used by cities to address climate change and local development.

Capacities of city authorities in four partner cities to plan and implement mitigation and adaptation measures are to be enhanced, as per the first intended outcome of the project.
